Traditional Mesothelioma Treatment Options

There are three traditional methods of mesothelioma treatment:

  1. Surgery: the physical removal of diseased tissue.
  2. Chemotherapy: the treatment of malignancy via the use of anticancer drugs.
  3. Radiation therapy: the treatment of malignancy through the implementation of high energy radiation waves.

Traditional mesothelioma treatments are often used in conjunction with one-another so as to attack a case of mesothelioma on multiple fronts. An aggressive treatment known as tri-modal therapy combines surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy into a single treatment modality and is believed capable of increasing mean survival time of mesothelioma patients.

Unfortunately, traditional mesothelioma treatments have been unable to eradicate or even contain the deadly cancer. Traditional treatments are the same as those used to treat a variety of other cancers.

Surgery

Extrapleural pneumonectomy (pneumectomy) is a type of radical surgery used to treat patients with advanced malignant pleural mesothelioma. An extrapleural pneumonectomy procedure involves the removal of the pleura, part of the diaphragm, part of the pericardium and the entire lung closes to the tumor mass. Mesothelioma patients who have successfully undergone an extrapleural pneumonectomy have seen their lives extended by a period ranging to as long as four years longer than the mean survival time.
